Mary Debono, Feldenkrais Practitioner and NLP Practitioner

Creator of Debono Moves

When I started working on a collaborative book in the field of equine-assisted services, one of the first people I invited to contribute was Stacey. After working with her personally during a quest to reconnect with horses during my PhD studies, I knew I wanted her to write a chapter for my book, Integrating Horses into Healing. I knew she would bring something special—and she did. Her insights into building true, relational partnerships with horses are exactly what this field needs. Her work helps create the kind of connection where horses feel safe, seen, and free to show up authentically—something every professional in equine-assisted therapy should strive for.

And if you need proof that her methods work? Just look at Benny. She found him in a pasture—a big, kind, slightly pushy draft cross—and brought him along with patience and clarity until he was ready for a partner. I bought him from her after his training, and today he’s thriving with my goddaughter, confidently competing in three phases and loving the connection they’ve built.

If you’re an equine professional looking to deepen your horsemanship and create real safety and collaboration with your horses, Heart Centered Horsemanship is the place to start.

Many books, articles and certification paths for EAP don’t give a lot of actual “hands on” techniques to use with your clients - it’s more about theory, philosophy and general practice (i.e. connection, nervous system regulation). That information has been great, but I wanted more ideas of what to do when in the session with a client (or clients) and horses. Stacey has given me countless activities and techniques to use when working with my clients and horses, all in keeping with the concepts of kindness, connection, regulation, mindful movement and horsemanship. It has been invaluable. I have used her ideas in many sessions with my clients, and am having wonderful results. Learning how to implement the concepts of connection, nervous system regulation, mindful movement, etc. has helped me so much in my journey in working with clients.

The Mindful Horsemanship clinic was so much fun! Stacey started the day with yoga. I thought the way she was able to connect the movements on the ground to riding movements under saddle was very insightful and gave me another way to make sense of what my posture tells my horse. The groundwork session helped me to better understand my own body language. I was having trouble lunging during that session, I quickly realized why! She pointed out things I didn’t even realize I was doing! Lastly, we finished the day with a fun riding lesson. Stacey had her hands full with me, but she was so helpful to point out my tension points and how to let them go safely. The personal attention Stacey gave to each person was so appreciated. I will be back for future clinics.

Mindful Horsemanship: The Three Tiers

This foundational clinic covers The Three Tiers, which are:

How we show up and how the horse experiences us.

Giving the horse a reason to connect.

Communicating in the horse's language.of movement, position, energy, and body language.

Speaking the Horse's Language

With this focus, we will dive deeper into recognizing how the horse responds to our subtle and often unconscious non-verbal communication. Participants will:

Understand how to communicate with any horse without hours of training.

"Listen" to what the horses are saying through their movements and body language and learn to respond accordingly to create the desired outcome.

Learn to be intentional with non-verbal communication, set clear and effective boundaries that the horse will organize around, and to move the horse as an extension of the body.

Riding with Mindful Movement

Learn to ride with subtle cues that any horse can understand. Participants will deepen awareness of how embodied communication creates a relationship in which the horse moves as an extension of the rider's body.. This focus includes:

A lesson on the mat to explore intentional movement without the horse.

Understanding embodied communication both on and off the horse.

Experiencing how the horse's language of movement, position, and energy applies to riding.

How to support the horse in carrying a rider with balance, ease, and healthy movement.

Exploring Debono Moves

Created by Feldenkrais Practitioner Mary Debono, this hands-on modality is an ideal way to calm the nervous system, soften the body, and strengthen connection. Participants will:

Understand how we can use touch to help horses release muscular tension and bracing for more fluid ease of movement.

Learn effective ways to soothe the horse and regulate the nervous system.

Gain a new appreciation of how going slower, softer, and easier can enhance their relationship with their horse.

Horsemanship for Equine-Assisted Learning and Therapy Programs

This focus is specifically developed for equine specialists, professionals providing equine-assisted services, volunteers in therapeutic programs, and people interested in therapeutic horsemanship. By holding a safe space for the horse and practicing mindfulness of their nuanced responses, we support a space where clients can learn, heal, and grow through equine connection. Facilitating these sessions isn't about control or performance, but allowing the horse to show up in an authentic way and creating opportunities for clients to engage safely with these powerful creatures.

Learn practices that will foster cooperation and ease with your horses, and add valuable elements to your sessions with clients.

Discover compassionate and effective alternatives to traditional training that are more suitable for a therapeutic environment.

Develop tools to deepen situational awareness, creating meaningful interactions that enhance therapeutic outcomes.
